We review concepts from Carroll Quigley's Tragedy and Hope (1966), a seminal work on the life cycles of civilizations. America now seems mired in an "age of conflict" marked by class struggles, irrationality, and culture wars. Can there be a new "age of expansion" or will we enter into a "universal empire"?
